'Help me set up my own business'

The 38year old HR Director said he was fed-up with running someone else’s business and labour force.  'I want to set up my own Sales and Marketing training business and I want you to help me to do it.' 

The coach uses carefully sculptured words here in a format that is known as an 'intervention'  Frequently it is just a one sentence question

 HR Director:  I don’t know at the moment but that is what I will have to find out when I set up.

Coach intervention

HR Director:  Before I set up I can do a business plan and design a website.  I could have  talks with some potential customers who I know. 

Coach intervention 

The HR Director sits quietly thinking for a while.  'Looking at it like that its pretty clear I will have to do it completely differently from what I thought'

Jointly with the coach, he constructs a business plan that reveals he is short of £100k to be able to develop the technology required to deliver his service. 

The coach introduced him to a “portfolio Angel/chairman” who invests £150k in the idea and takes 20% of the equity.  The portfolio chairman opens doors at high level to target businesses and in the first trading year the business gets £500k fee income making £350k gross profit.  In the second year, sales are £800k and the business is sold for £1.2m.  The portfolio chairman gets £240k for the £150k investment.  The HR Director gets £900k 'for a good idea and 2 years hard work'
