CEO National Coaching Register - Case Histories - BIMBOThese are abbreviated conversations - from some hours of discussion - to illustrate key decision moments. Based on real cases with changed detail to preserve confidentiality
Get me a BIMBO (Buy In Management Buy Out)The 42-year old Finance Director told the coach: “This is my last chance to really make some capital. I want to get in to a BIMBO deal but don’t know how to. Can you help me to do it?” Coach: What do you want to get out of a BIMBO deal that is so important to you? FD: I want the capital to be able to retire. £3m is the target. I am fed-up with earning profits for other people and want to make them for myself. I am prepared to put in £100k of my own money to back myself. Coach: The best way in to a BIMBO deal when you are not an MD yourself is to find a portfolio chairman who you build a relationship with and then if they get a deal they take you in. Do you think you could do that? FD: If that’s what I’ve got to do. Will you help me put a plan together that will get me in to a deal? Coach: I will help you plan all the steps but you will have to do all the work to make this successful. They put a plan together to network the FD in to the marketplace where he would meet portfolio chairmen at conferences, dinners, VIP events etc. The FD starts to research potential companies that might be suitable for acquisition. In conversation with a corporate financier, the FD decides to ask a portfolio chairman if he will join him to put in a bid for a company. The deal does not proceed but the Chairman comes back to the FD and says “I have got a deal and you have shown real commitment. You can come in with me”. The FD invests £50k for 5% in a business costing £50m. Three years later, the business is sold for £125m and the FD’s 5% brings him a £6m capital profit. He sees the coach and says “I have fulfilled my life dreams. Here I am at 46 years of age a multi-millionaire. I am buying a house for £1m in the sun in Turkey and am going to spend the winters skiing in the Alps!
