CEO National Coaching Register - Case Histories - AmbitionThese are abbreviated conversations - from some hours of discussion - to illustrate key decision moments. Based on real cases with changed detail to preserve confidentiality
'My company won't support CPD so I'm career stuck'
The 33-year old was Operations Manager and wanted to become an MD. “The problem is, the company will not support any career development. They won’t let me go on courses and they stifle any initiative to do anything to improve myself. I feel completely stuck and yet scared that I am not doing anything to achieve my dream of becoming an MD. The coach uses carefully sculptured words here in a format that is known as an 'intervention' Frequently it is just a one sentence question
Ops Manager, thinks quietly. 'I know it is up to me really.... In fact, it’s completely up to me. I have been sitting on my hands instead of accepting the truth, which is that no-one can stop me if I make my mind up. What I want to know is what I should actually do to get myself promoted?
Coach intervention.
Ops Manager: I have to get a lot of experience in (he lists the topics). I have to do it myself in my own time, evenings and weekends and I have to set a five-year plan to acquire all those skills so that I can get myself an MD job.
The coach and the client work out a detailed personal development plan involving a lot of time commitment. Three years later, the Ops Manager is appointed Deputy MD, and the next year MD of a £10m family business. Eyes shining, he says to the coach “Why doesn’t everyone know how easy it is to achieve your goals – if you just accept that it is all up to you - and you WORK for it!!
